Who wants to be a Pokémon Master! Pokémon has once again taken the world by storm as millions of people have downloaded the new app, Pokémon Go, on their mobile devices in under a month to join the craze. Niantic made a power move by bringing back the old game and revamping it to fit current technology and social trends. This new release is catching almost anyone that grew up in the 90’s and 2000’s with nostalgia and sparking excitement in both new and old gamers. Solely within the first weekend it launched, the App reached 50 million downloads. Nintendo stocks have since increased and a lot of people are happy about it. I mean who doesn’t love having strangers wander around your neighbourhood or crawling through your backyard in this new odyssey to find virtual Pokémon. The question remaining is, where will the next Pokémon show up?
For those of you that are still unsure as to what Pokémon is exactly. The game was first introduced in 1996 and used to be played on the original Game Boy. The game now allows users to join the adventure, become a Pokémon trainer themselves and scour the city or town they’re in to catch virtual Pokémon creatures.
Pokémon Go Requirements and Explanation
What do you need to play Pokémon go? First, a mobile phone is needed in order to download the app. Secondly, a pair of running shoes may make it easier for you to succeed as the game requires players to walk or run to various areas to catch Pokémon and travel 10km before your virtual Pokémon egg to hatch. The system relies upon data to run the game and uses a satellite and GPS to detect where you are. Using GPS, the game can tell what buildings and monuments are in your geographic area. Your phone’s camera is also used to display outside surroundings and as you move your view finder around, different areas show up on your screen. The game then adds computer-generated Pokémon into the view on your screen. There are various “pokéstops” where trainers can pick up virtual supplies for catching Pokémon. There are “Pokémon Gyms” that players can capture to serve as a challenge to opposing Pokémon teams. There are “Pokémon lures” that allow you to attract Pokémon to an area and “Pokéballs” allowing you to actually catch the Pokémon in the game. With all these tools in hand, you have the potential to become the best Pokémon master to ever play the game.
Becoming a Pokémon master requires a lot of work and a lot of time. It has encouraged people to exercise and explore their neighbourhoods with their mobile device at hand. Friendships have blossomed as players work together to reach common goals of conquering Pokémon gym leaders and collecting Pokémon. Unfortunately, some people are taking it a little too far. Businesses have experienced a loss in productivity as employers have been competing for the attention of their employees with their mobile device and Pokémon Go. According to Forbes, 69% of trainers play at work, which has forced some businesses to address the issue specifically.
Pokémon is a fun game that has won over the hearts and minds of adults and children alike, but is it all sunshine and rainbows? Is this a story book ending where everyone gets their cake and eat it too? In fairy tales maybe… but not in reality. Those Pokémon Go players who are not vigilantly managing their data usage on their mobile device are going to get a hefty data plan usage bill. In fact it has already happened. One person actually had to pay a bill of$4,954 dollars US for not managing their data usage. The explanation for this tragedy is that the majority of Pokémon Go players are changing their mobile device habits becausePokémon Go requires data to play.
